Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association (GTDA)
Up until November 2022, the representative body for taxi drivers in Guernsey was the Guernsey Taxi Owners Federation (GTOF), which was formed in the early 1990s. When a new president and committee were elected in November 2022, they renamed the GTOF the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association (GTDA). The association represents both the holders of public service vehicle permits and taxi licences. It is registered as a 'not for profit' organisation.
Regulation of the taxi industry
Driver & Vehicle Licensing (part of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure) regulates all taxi licence holders and Public Service Vehicle (PSV) permit holders. The GTDA Committee regularly meet with staff from Driver & Vehicle Licensing on matters relating to the industry's regulation, legislation, policy, and fare structure.
Taxi inspections
Driver & Vehicle Licensing require all taxis to be inspected annually to ensure the vehicle remains at a high standard both mechanically and cosmetically. Should the taxi fail the inspection, the operator will be given a period of time to rectify the fault. If the fault is of a minor nature, the operator will be permitted to continue to operate the taxi while arranging to get it fixed. However, they must produce it with the fault(s) rectified by the deadline date.
Code of conduct
Driver & Vehicle Licensing has issued a code of conduct for all taxi Licence holders and public service vehicle permit holders. For details, click the button below.
All Taxis have an identifying plate number. Should you feel at any time that you have not been treated fairly, please ask the taxi driver for their plate number and then report your concern to Driver & Vehicle Licensing or the GTDA.
Taxi review
After consulting with the GTOF, Driver & Vehicle Licensing conducted a comprehensive review of the Taxi Industry. While a number of recommendations were made, the most notable was the introduction of the Guernsey Taxi App in June 2023. The App is proving a very successful tool for the general public, enabling them to obtain a taxi without making several calls to numerous taxi companies. It has also helped taxi drivers get more work and reduce the amount of dead mileage that they were incurring by linking jobs.
